Since the first of July Legacy Refworks is no longer available. You will no longer be able to log in to your account or use it to place references in a document.

Legacy Refworks will keep a hold of all  their data until October 2023, after which also the data will no longer be available. All references that have not been transferred to the 'new' Refworks will be lost.

How to retrieve your references and continue to work with Refworks:

  1. Go to https://refworks.proquest.com/
  2. Create an account with your @umcg.nl / @rug.nl / @student.rug.nl email. (Do not use "login from my institution" - it does not work for us).
  3. After creating an account and logging in to to Add > Import References
  4. Click on Refworks Legacy and log in with your old Refworks account. All your references will then be transferred to the new Refworks and can then be used again to cite in documents.

Since the beginning of this year Refworks is now available in Word365 on the UMCG network. This has fixed the issue that come up at the end of last year when refworks completely stopped working in Word2010.

Note:

- The button 'Sync database' does not work. It gives you an error that you might be offline. To sync your database you must log out of the plug in and then log back in.

Refworks has updated their Word-plug in ‘Write-n-Cite’ and with this update they disabled all earlier versions. In the UMCG this newest version is not yet installed and thus Refworks can not be used at the moment in Word. We have requested that the update is installed as quickly as possible and we hope this will resolve the problem soon.

Note: If you want to continue to cite references with another program in Word than Refworks’ ‘Write-n-Cite’, then you have to redo all references. Each reference manager and their Word-plugin uses its own fieldcodes.

Alternatives:

1. Install Write-n-Cite on your own computer at home. You can download it from https://refworks.com (legacy versie) of https://refworks.proquest.com/ under “tools”

2. On a Windows10 UMCG computer under “Invoegen > invoegtoepassingen downloaden” you can search for Refworks Citation Manager and add it to Word. This version of Refworks does not recognize the references placed with Write-n-Cite, so you will have to redo the references.

3. Switch to EndNote. EndNote is also a reference manager, but it uses its own app and the references are saved locally. This makes EndNote much more stable on the UMCG network than Refworks.

a. Your references in Refworks can relatively easily be transferred to EndNote, but all references placed in your Word file with refworks have to be replaced by EndNote.

b. Contact the Central Medical Library if you want to switch to EndNote.

For questions or support you can email the Central Medical Library at refman@umcg.nl

Due to financial and technical reasons, the current RefWorks contract will not be renewed. Do you use RefWorks? Then switch to our other reference manager, EndNote.

RefWorks and Word

From April 2025, the link between RefWorks and Word will no longer work within the RUG-UWP environment. UMCG employees can still use the new Word plugin, RefWorks Citation Manager*, until the end of 2025. From 1 January 2026, RefWorks will no longer be available for the RUG and UMCG.

*This Refworks Citation Manager needs to be installed from the 'Microsoft Office Store'. In Word, under the "Home" tab you can click "Add-Ins" . Then search for Refworks and add the Citation Manager.

Be aware that the Refworks Citation Manager uses different 'field codes' than "Write-N-Cite", this means they will need to be converted by the citation manager. This should be done automatically and in testing this -mostly- worked. Be sure to make a back-up of your document before doing this.
