Een autobiografisch en in de onderwijspraktijk zeer populair boek over kansenongelijkheid in het onderwijs, over leerlingen die opgroeien in armoede en structureel minder kansen krijgen om zich te ontwikkelen dan leerlingen uit meer geprivilegieerde gezinnen.

De gelukkige klas

Een klassieker uit 1926, waarin de auteur, zelf met een onderwijsachtergrond, op een invoelende wijze vertelt over de gebeurtenissen in een klas, zodanig dat je van de kinderen gaat houden

Wij slaven van Suriname

Lees dit boek en leer meer over de geschiedenis van Suriname en het koloniale verleden van Nederland. Absoluut geen lichte kost, maar dat is geen reden om geen kennis op te doen over dit belangrijke onderwerp. Anton de Kom is sinds 2020 opgenomen in de Canon van Nederland.

Onderweg naar 1832

De auteur, een emeritus hoogleraar van onze faculteit en begenadigd verteller, schetst de levensverhalen van jonge mensen in de 19de eeuw die in de stad Groningen een onderwijzersloopbaan opbouwen. Als Groningse student zul je veel plekken waar de verhalen zich afspelen herkennen.

Het kind als spiegel van de beschaving

Hierin geven wetenschappers uit verschillende disciplines, van pedagoog tot demograaf en van ontwikkelingspsycholoog tot socioloog, hun visie op "het kind". Het verbreedt je blik en zet je aan het denken.

De flat aan het einde van de wereld

Dit is een vermakelijk kinderboek dat goede aanknopingspunten biedt om serieuze maatschappelijke onderwerpen met kinderen te bespreken, zoals milieuvervuiling, omgang met nieuwkomers en het gebruik van sociale media.

De achtste dag

Een schitterende roman over de liefde voor een vrouw en een kind en over de vraag wat we achterlaten als we sterven. In een verlaten grenslandschap aan een rivier woont timmerman Egbert met zijn zoon met beperking Adam, voor wie hij alleen de zorg draagt nadat zijn vrouw Emma is overleden. Wanneer Egbert hoort dat hij nog maar kort te leven heeft, moet hij noodgedwongen nadenken over de toekomst van zijn zoon. Adam is volledig van hem afhankelijk en Egbert heeft zijn vrouw beloofd hem nooit alleen te laten. Als hij tegen beter weten in de opdracht aanneemt om een houten trap te maken, geeft hij zichzelf zeven dagen de tijd om een beslissing te nemen over hun lot.

Zomervacht

Een indrukwekkende roman over de 13-jarige Brian en zijn vader Maurice, die op een afgelegen terrein in een caravan wonen. Om de paar maanden bezoeken zij samen zijn oudere broer Lucien die in een instelling woont voor mensen met een ernstige verstandelijke en meervoudige beperking. Tot de instelling gaat verbouwen en Lucien elders opgevangen moet worden. Er volgt een zomer waarin twee broers elkaar leren kennen. Maar hoe communiceer je met iemand die niet kan spreken? En hoe maak je keuze als je zelf nog zoveel moet ontdekken?

Niet voor niets een absolute bestseller. En het boek doet precies wat de ondertitel belooft. Het bevat bovendien niet alleen geschiedenis, maar er zijn ook waardevolle sociologische gezichtspunten in verwerkt. Als alle studenten dit zouden lezen, hebben we een stevige gemeenschappelijke basis.

Over de tragedie achter de toeslagenaffaire. Over ministers, Kamerleden en ambtenaren: “We strompelen verontwaardigd van schandaal naar affaire zonder te beseffen hoe wij allen bijdragen aan een uitkomst die niemand wil. We kunnen alleen ontsnappen (…) als we iets vaker de mildheid vinden om het oordeel op te schorten, eerst proberen te begrijpen waarom mensen zich zo gedragen.” En over journalisten: “media moeten niet belangrijk maken wat spannend is, maar spannend maken wat belangrijk is.”

Het Wilhelmus voorbij

Hakenkruizen in de lift. Meisjes die beweren dat de aanslagen in Parijs in scène zijn gezet. Docenten die zich soms geen raad weten met klassikale discussies over maatschappelijk controversiële onderwerpen. De maatschappij dringt de school steeds verder binnen, maar we weten niet goed hoe we leerlingen voor moeten bereiden op het leven in een democratische samenleving.
In dit pamflet zet Bram Eidhof uiteen wat burgerschap precies is en waarom we er zo mee worstelen. En hoe we voorkomen dat burgerschapsonderwijs een eliteproject of identiteitsproject wordt. In plaats daarvan pleit hij voor scherp gedefinieerd en substantieel burgerschapsonderwijs. Daarmee levert dit pamflet een belangrijke bijdrage aan een hoogst actuele discussie.

Tegen de vrouwen

Dit boek gaat over de taaie weerstand tegen de vrouwenemancipatie, die al bijna 150 jaar bestrijkt. Het verzet komt volgens De Swaan in de eerste plaats van fundamentalistische gelovigen en het tweede verzetsfront wordt gevormd door extreemrechts in de politiek. Het maatschappelijk stelsel van vrouwenonderdrukking, Het tweede deel bevat de optimistische boodschap van het boek: de onstuitbare opkomst van vrouwen in de wereld van nu. Lees dit boek vooral ook vanwege prachtige taalgebruik van De Swaan, zijn eruditie en zijn sociologische analyses.

Hoe migratie echt werkt

De discussie over immigratie is volgens Hein de Haas onlosmakelijk verbonden met economisch beleid, arbeidsnormen, ongelijkheid, sociale voorzieningen, onderwijs en zorg. Het verminderen van afhankelijkheid van arbeidsmigranten vereist fundamentele veranderingen, zoals het verhogen van de pensioenleeftijd of het stopzetten van subsidies aan sectoren die sterk leunen op migrantenarbeid.

An experiment in love

Op de Holy Redeemer school ontmoet Carmel Julianne, die als dochter van een dokter een welvarende en rimpelloze jeugd heeft gehad ‘met zonnehoedjes en Beatrix Potter’. Dankzij de katholieke signatuur en ondanks het selectieve karakter van de school kunnen de meisjes elkaar ontmoeten en vriendinnen worden over de sociale afstand heen. Precies wat nu in het onderwijs niet meer gebeurt, zo lezen we in het laatste Onderwijsverslag.

De machteloze onderzoeker

Sociaal-wetenschappelijk onderzoek is kwetsbaar door het sociale karakter ervan.
Onderzoekers en proefpersonen, partners in het onderzoek, kunnen door hun persoonlijke inbreng en betrokkenheid onvermoede wendingen geven aan resultaten en conclusies. Hoogstraten illustreert aan de hand van experimenteel onderzoek de vele voetangels en klemmen op het pad van de onderzoeker. Hij spoort hem aan tot een grote mate van bescheidenheid aangaande de geldigheid en reikwijdte van onderzoeksresultaten. Veel op sociaal-wetenschappelijk onderzoek gebaseerde uitspraken doorstaan de toets der kritiek niet.

Uitgewoond :waarom het hoog tijd is voor een nieuwe woonpolitiek

Winnaar van “De Sociologische Bril 2022”. Pleidooi voor een nieuwe woonpolitiek. Aan de hand van elf mythes beschrijft en bekritiseert Hochstenbach het failliete woonbeleid. De politiek is verantwoordelijk voor de wooncrisis. Zijn boek is een pleidooi voor betaalbaar wonen voor iedereen.

Het bureau

In deze zevendelige roman beschrijft Voskuil de menselijke verhoudingen op en rondom het wetenschappelijke Meertens Instituut tussen de jaren 1957 en 1987. De hoofdpersoon, Maarten Koning, ervaart het leven als een schijnwereld, waarin mensen hun behoefte aan aandacht, erkenning of macht verbergen achter schijnbaar zinvolle, maar in werkelijkheid zinloze werkzaamheden. Deze verborgen behoeften van mensen die elkaar niet hebben uitgezocht maar wel dag in dag uit met elkaar moeten verkeren, zijn aanleiding tot talloze wrijvingen en spanningen, een enkele maal met tragische afloop, maar meestal komisch.

De ontdekking van Urk

Matthias Declerq woonde een aantal maanden op Urk om het dorp te observeren en te doorgronden. Het boek geeft een geweldige impressie van het leven in een verzuilde samenleving, waarbij zeer relevante sociologische thema's als identiteit, sociale status, normen en ongeschreven regels en intergenerationele conflicten voorbijkomen. Het is tegelijkertijd ook een beschrijving van de opkomst en ondergang van de Nederlandse visserij, de gevolgen van de inpoldering van Flevoland, en de desastreuze impact van drugshandel en -gebruik.

De eeuw van mijn vader

Je zou ook gemeenschappelijke basiswensen inzake de sociale geschiedenis van ons eigen land kunnen vaststellen. Dit boek verschaft een dergelijk beeld. Niet door een droge opsomming van historische feiten, maar levendig en invoelend, aan de hand van Maks eigen familiegeschiedenis.

Het oerboek van de mens

Dit boek geeft een antropologische lezing van de Bijbel als een geschiedenis van de menselijke ontwikkeling. Het laat zien hoe de mensen al vanaf de vroegste tijd sociologie bedreven, in de zin van opvattingen (theorieën) en gebruiken die hen in staat stelden de werkelijkheid te begrijpen en te beheersen. Een ideaal boek om studenten een besef te geven van de kunst van het samenleven.

Exodus

Migratie is een controversieel onderwerp dat tot hevige debatten leidt, waarin emoties het vaak winnen van feiten. Hoogleraar Economie Paul Collier legt in een feitelijke analyse helder uit hoe migratie werkt, en bekijkt dit vraagstuk vanuit drie perspectieven: de gastlanden, de migranten zelf, en de achterblijvers in de landen van herkomst. Met behulp van het begrip diaspora legt Collier haarfijn uit wat de kosten en baten van migratie zijn voor alle drie de groepen – ook de ongewenste effecten.

Migration is a controversial topic that leads to heated debates, in which emotions often win out over facts. In a factual analysis, Professor of Economics Paul Collier clearly explains how migration works, looking at the issue from three perspectives: the host countries, the migrants themselves, and those left behind in the countries of origin. Using the concept of diaspora, Collier explains in great detail the costs and benefits of migration for all three groups - including the unwanted effects.

The righteous mind. Why good people are divided by politics and religion

The book explains in a fundamental way why we do not all think the same way about politics and morality. This opens the door to the most important competence of a sociologist, namely the ability to think from different perspectives and to understand and articulate different views within the population. You cannot be trained in this early enough.

Sapiens: A Brief History of Humankind

An absolute bestseller for good reason. And the book does exactly what the subtitle promises. Moreover, it not only contains history, but also incorporates valuable sociological perspectives. If all students read this, we would have a solid common ground.

The Rise of the Meritocracy

Michael Young coined the concept of meritocracy. The concept expressed that everyone had to ‘earn’ (‘merit’) a good social position through their own achievements. In a meritocracy, all children would have equal opportunities to prove their worth in education. Michael Young wrote his book as a dystopia, a society with grim features. Regardless of the extent to which ‘equal opportunities’ are realised, meritocratic educational selection creates a new loser class that feels disrespected and humiliated to the bone. Has a better sociological prediction of the future ever been written?

Psychology

Humankind: A Hopeful History

The book contends that people are fundamentally decent and suggests a new worldview grounded in this optimistic perspective of humanity. It challenges notions of inherent human selfishness and malevolence. To support Bregman's view that this positive outlook is more realistic than the negative one, the book undertakes a multi-disciplinary exploration of historical events, scientific studies, and philosophical arguments. I believe it’s a must-read, if everyone read this book a lot of things would probably be different. Available in over 30 languages.

Beyond Freedom and Dignity

The famous behaviourist shares his vision on how psychology could improve society and also challenges us to reflect on the nature of psychological processes, a challenge that still persists.

Statistical Thinking: Analyzing Data in an Uncertain World

Chalmers's textbooks have been used world-wide for decades and takes us in an essayist style to the different positions on what science is – and what we do it for.

Wild Souls

On pondering the usefulness and idiocy of zoos and related animal conservatism. Philosophical perspectives as a framework for how we should interpret ‘species’ give thought to consciousness and the (in)ability of humans to distinguish themselves from other inhabitants of the world.

The New Breed

Darling addresses the New Species, AI, by citing a history of other species comparisons with humans. One passage offers a useful insight into how the spirit of the times can change through changing views on the same things; a pig that had attacked a child in the Middle Ages was condemned to be burned at the stake - the fact that we no longer condemn pigs within the judiciary helps provide perspective on how AI and legislature should be seen in the (near) future.

The Light Eaters

In this book, the author goes to great lengths to convince the reader that plants are essentially much more similar to humans than what is apparent at first glance. Schlanger constantly reiterates that attributing human concepts to plants is so controversial that, until recently, scientists were twisting and turning to avoid having to justify its implications. Perhaps, Schlanger argues, we have now reached a point where it is not at all inconceivable for plants to be attributed human traits, because humans do not dominate these traits; in fact, plants are better at communication.

Entangled Life

For Sheldrake, what Schlanger attributes to plants can be found in its connection in the invisible; hyphae. A network of fungi form the telephone wires that connect forests and, according to Sheldrake, enable them to warn each other of every conceivable threat. The forest exists by the grace of the fungi and vice versa, and fungi are the loop that ties together the circle of death and life on the continuum to make the continuum cyclical. This is how life is entangled.

Infinite Jest

This novel describes a hypercapitalistic world where years are sponsored by different companies and a mysterious epidemic caused by a legendary film that is apparently so entertaining that those who watch it fall into a catatonic bliss, unable to tear themselves away from the television, is spreading. The book is also about addictions/abuse at large, mental health problems and the commercialisation of them all. It is about both individual and societal ache. The novel showcases a ravishingly complex and rich worldview that is at times utterly absurd and other times freakishly accurate, or both. While it took me a whole year to read it, it also made me cry, laugh or close it in the middle of a sentence feeling an existential dread at 9 in the morning.

Noise: A Flaw in Human Judgment

"Noise" is a profound exploration of the variability in human judgment and the errors that can result from it. As noise is often left invisible, I believe everyone should read this book. This book not only enhances our understanding of human decision-making but also provides practical solutions to mitigate the impact of noise. As a psychologist, I found this book to be incredibly inspiring and insightful, reinforcing my pride in our profession.

Getting to yes: Negotiating Agreement Without Giving In

This is a book that students read (among other books) for the conflict management course (third year Psychology students), and they find it very interesting. It provides very simple, real-life examples to help them improve their negotiation skills and manage their conflicts more effectively.

The Undoing Project

Double biography on Kahneman and Tversky, a brilliantly written and very inspiring book on how important psychology is with a fantastic last sentence!

Motherhood

A beautifully written semi-memoir about the (inner) struggle against societal expectations of motherhood, dissecting motherhood as one of the things you can do in life. Philosophical, funny, rational and esoteric at the same time.

Faith, Hope and Carnage

Over 40 hours of interview material with Nick Cave (frontman of the Bad Seeds) on love, grief and the power of ‘poetic truth’ in relation to faith and spirituality. A beautiful, vulnerable, introspective work, even for people who have never heard of Nick Cave.

The power of habit: why we do what we do and how to change

This book takes you to the edge of scientific discoveries that explain why habits exist and how they can be changed. It brings to life a whole new understanding of human nature and its potential for transformation. It shows that we can transform our businesses, communities, and lives by harnessing this science.

Thinking, fast and slow

This book explains the two systems that drive the way we think. System 1 is fast, intuitive, and emotional; System 2 is slower, more deliberative, and more logical. Kahneman reveals where we can and cannot trust our intuitions and how we can tap into the benefits of slow thinking. He offers practical and enlightening insights into how choices are made, and how we can use different techniques to guard against the mental glitches that often get us into trouble.

Hallucinations

In Hallucinations, with his usual elegance, curiosity, and compassion, Dr. Oliver Sacks weaves together stories of his patients and his own mind-altering experiences to illuminate what hallucinations tell us about the organization and structure of our brains, how they have influenced every culture's folklore and art, and why the potential for hallucination is present in us all, a vital part of the human condition.

Schopenhauer's porcupines: intimacy and its dilemmas

Are human beings destined to find perfect complements in love or are we more like the fabled porcupines - forever jostling for a place between painful involvement and loveless isolation? That is the question at the heart of this book. "People seek therapy when things have gone wrong in their lives," observes Luepnitz, "They arrive in the grip of a death wish or some unspeakable obsession, but what is at stake always turns out to be intimacy - the endless dilemmas of loyalty and desire. Schopenhauer's Porcupines recounts five stories from Luepnitz's practice as they grapple with panic attacks, psychosomatic illness, marital despair, and sexual recklessness.

We live, say Edgar and Peter Schein, in a culture of telling. Too often we tell others what we think they need to know or should do. But whether we are leading or following, what matters most is we get to the truth. We have to develop a commitment to sharing vital facts and identifying faulty assumptions - it can mean the difference between success and failure. This is why we need Humble Inquiry more than ever. The Scheins define Humble Inquiry as the gentle art of drawing someone out, of asking questions to which you do not know the answer, of building relationships based on curiosity and interest in the other person.

Scaling up Excellence

Scaling up excellence is the key to creating a great organisation. It's how a small enterprise expands without losing focus. It's how a brilliant new idea or plan developed by the few goes on to be adopted by the many. And, in hard times and tough situations, it's how pockets of smart new thinking overcome cultures of indifference or negativity. Superforecasting describes what we can learn from them. It shows the methods used by these superforecasters which enable them to outperform even professional intelligence analysts with access to classified data. And it offers practical advice on how we can all use these methods for our benefit.

Van silo-probleem naar samenwerking: 16 oplossingen voor gebrekkige samenwerking tussen afdelingen

Ieder vraagstuk kent talrijke dimensies, zoals ecologische, financiële, juridische en maatschappelijke. Werknemers staan voor de uitdaging om zoveel mogelijk dimensies te gebruiken bij het oplossen van vraagstukken. Dit vergt dat werknemers over de grens van hun eigen afdeling kijken en samenwerken met collega’s van andere afdelingen. Vaak ontbreekt het aan communicatie, coördinatie en samenwerking tussen verschillende afdelingen: het silo-probleem. Dit boek gaat in op de oorzaken, gevolgen en oplossingen, op managementniveau, werknemersniveau, afdelingsniveau en organisatieniveau.

Lerarenopleiding

Optimistische woede: fix het seksisme in de literatuur. Een manifest.

Het collectief 'Fixdit' bestaat uit verschillende Vlaamse en Nederlandse schrijfsters die het seksisme in de literatuurgeschiedenis onder de aandacht brengen. Waarom zijn 'dode witte mannen' zo oververtegenwoordigd in de literaire canon? Een belangrijk manifest voor docenten Nederlands (maar ook voor andere talen) om zich bewust te worden van de 'vergeten' vrouwen in de literatuur.

Supergaaf: de overtuigende taal van Mark Rutte

Dit boek is geschreven door docent Nederlands Robbert Wigt en gaat over de gesprekstechnieken die Mark Rutte inzette: Hoe wist hij zo veel moeilijke debatten te doorstaan? Hoe kan het dat hij met de VVD keer op keer verkiezingen won? En wat maakt hem zo moeilijk te interviewen? Het boek is interessant voor docenten Nederlands omdat hierin tal van concrete voorbeelden uit de praktijk in voorkomen die leerlingen iets kunnen leren over debatteren en het concept 'framing'.

Op de vuist: vijftig jaar politiek en protestliedjes in Nederland

Literatuur en poëzie zijn natuurlijk breder dan enkel romans en gedichten. Liedteksten lenen zich ook uitstekend voor literaire analyses in lessen Nederlands. Laurens Ham schreef een boek over de geschiedenis van het Nederlandstalige protestlied. Aan de hand van zulke liedjes valt met leerlingen te praten over zowel de literaire aspecten in de liedjes, als over de maatschappelijke achtergrond waartegen deze liedjes zijn geschreven.
