What is RefWorks?

This update to RefWorks is a new way to collect, organize, annotate en cite  research publications.  It has the same functionality as the old "legacy" RefWorks, and an easier-to-use, more intuitive interface.

Two versions: the new and the old RefWorks

This LibGuide is about the new RefWorks, but there is also an old 'legacy' version of RefWorks. The legacy version will still be available in the coming years. Before you switch from the Legacy RefWorks to the New RefWorks, you should consider a number of factors:

  • For normal, non-intensive use, we recommend the new RefWorks because of the user-friendliness and additional options (such as adding and annotating PDFs , and using RefWorks in Google Docs)
  • For intensive use, for example in a systematic review, when you are using hundreds or even thousands of references, we recommend that you continue using Legacy RefWorks. This because: in the Legacy RefWorks, you can select all references in a folder with one click , to edit or move them, regardless of the number of references in that folder. In the new RefWorks, you can only edit or move references per page, up to a maximum of 100 references at a time.

CAUTION:

Using both old and new RefWorks within one Word-document will likely cause problems. We do not recommend switching to New RefWorks in the middle of a project. Finish the project in old RefWorks, and start your next project in New RefWorks.

Creating an Account

An institutional account is available to staff and students of the RUG and UMCG, and includes 10GB of document storage, unlimited sharing inside and outside the institution, easy institution-wide sharing, phone and email tech support, training and more.

To create a RefWorks account:

  1. Go to http://refworks.proquest.com and click the “sign up” link.
  2. Fill in your information making sure to use your institutional email address (RUG or UMCG), you can’t sign up with @outlook.com, @gmail.com, etc..  Using your institutional email address will help Proquest to know whether you are entitled to an institutional account (with all the benefits mentioned above!).

Once you activate your account (you'll receive an email with a link to complete the registration process), you’ll get access immediately and can get started managing your documents.
