Problems with EndNote on UMCG network

Since the migration to OneDrive there is a problem with EndNote on the UMCG network. This problem concerns for example not finding your library or not being to open it. Please read the document below for more information and possible workarounds.

If you need help or have any questions please contact refman@umcg.nl

How to get EndNote?

To use EndNote you have to contact the "Onsite IV Beheerder" of your department. He or she can add EndNote to your account on the network.

May 2023:

Within the UMCG network there is a problem with EndNote and OneDrive. Within EndNote (which opens via Citrix) you don't see an up to date OneDrive folder, so you might not see your files. The only solution at the moment is waiting 10 minutes for the synchronisation within Citrix to start and then your documents will appear.

Creating a library in EndNote is not possible (in the normal way) on the UMCG network. You need to save your library in OneDrive, but the library can only synchronise when you close EndNote. But because EndNote is available via Citrix, closing it means all files are deleted and thus the OneDrive synchronisation doesn't happen.

Workaround:

  1. To create a library you need to create 2 libraries. So first create your library "My EndNote Library.enl" and save it on OneDrive. Then create another Library with a random name. You should now have 2 library windows open. Only close the first one "My EndNote Library.enl" and check in your OneDrive if the library file (.enl) has synchronised! If yes, then in EndNote go to File > Open Library and open "My EndNote Library.enl" again. You should be able to work with this library & open it again next time.
  2. Install EndNote on your private computer! (Email refman@umcg.nl for details)
  3. Instead of saving your library on OneDrive, save your library on the ‘old’ H-drive. This option only works on UMCG computers, not on UMCG “NextGen” laptops. Even though there was just a migration from the H-drive to OneDrive, the H-drive will remain available for the foreseeable future.
  4. Work with EndNote via the virtual environment of the University > uwp.rug.nl

Important:

On the UMCG-network (either an UMCG-computer or toegang.umcg.nl) you need to start the "EndNote for Word" shortcut to work with a version of Word with EndNote added. This is because of a new way the IT-department wants to make Word plug-ins available. You can find "EndNote for Word" in the start menu.

It is not recommended to save your EndNote libary on OneDrive. EndNote might have trouble opening the file and it has an increased risk of library corruption. On the UMCG network you might not have a choice and you must install it on OneDrive. It is then highly recommended to enable the EndNote synchronisation. Do this via "Sync configuration" in the menu on the left in EndNote. All your references, PDFs and groups will then be synchronised online and you will always be able to get them back if something happens to your library.

All University desktop computers should already have EndNote installed.

Go to the Windows Start button and choose: All programs > Library Services > EndNote

Warning
Important to note is that EndNote and Mendeley give errors when used together in Word. When you want to use EndNote the ICT department  to uninstall the Mendeley word-plugin, otherwise you will not be able to add references using EndNote in Word.

To use EndNote you have to contact the "Onsite IV Beheerder" of your department. He or she can add EndNote to your account on the network.

To work with EndNote on the UMCG "NextGen" Laptop, you need to go to toegang.umcg.nl and under "Apps" click on EndNote or EndNote for Word.

The Central Medical Library can send EndNote to UMCG-employees for usage at home. If you want to use EndNote at home, contact the library at refman@umcg.nl and let us know if you use a Windows or Apple computer.

If you have a university P-number or if you are a student you can use the university's download portal at: https://iris.service.rug.nl/ Here you can log in with your P- or S-number and then search for EndNote.

EndNote for iPad is available as an app.

EndNote is not supported as an app for Android. To work with EndNote on an android device you should use Endnote web.

EndNote available for UMCG

EndNote is the leading reference management software and is available on the UMCG-network.

With EndNote you can:

  • import references from databases such as PubMed or Web of Science
  • store, organize and edit your references
  • Cite while you write in Word and thus using references in a correct way in your manuscript
  • Choosing the right citation style in Word, such as Vancouver, and journal-specific formats
  • Share your references with others

EndNote (the desktop application) can hold an unlimited number of references. We recommend using the desktop application if you are heavily engaged in research.

The current version of EndNote in use at the UMCG and RUG is EndNote 20.
