What is SmartCat?


SmartCat is the Library search engine for students and staff of the University of Groningen. In SmartCat you will find the entire printed and electronic collection of the RUG Libraries. SmartCat is used for finding information sources such as journal articles, books, conference proceedings etc. SmartCat gives information about where material is located at the University of Groningen Library. It also gives holdings for other libraries in the Netherlands and abroad. SmartCat is much more than just a catalogue; it is a discovery tool.

Have you set up a personal account in SmartCat yet?

If you just want to do a search in SmartCat it is not necessary to sign in with a personal account, but if you want to request items, create personal list or see an overview of your loans, requests and fines you do need to sign in with a personal account.

You can set up a personal account by clicking on Sign In, and then by clicking on the Set/Reset Password link.

After you click on Set/reset password you will see the following screen on which you can request a new password. You enter your username (which is the 04... number on the back of your student/staff card and then you click on the Request new password button.


You will now receive an email with a link which enables you to set up your new SmartCat password.


From then on you sign in each time you start a new SmartCat session. You only have to do this once during a session. You don't have to enter your details again when requesting a book.
