Step 1: Funder requirements and budgeting

Most research funding organizations require publications from their grants to be published open access. They might have additional requirements as well. This includes the choice of a lisence for re-use (see box below)

Prior to submission of your article, your are advised to check

Get in touch with the open access support team (openaccess@umcg.nl ) if you have any doubts or questions.

Next step 2: Select a journals and check for discounts

Choose a license for how others can reuse your work

You will be asked to select a lisence for re-use. Open access publications use public copyright licenses to allow re-use, e.g. Creative Commons (CC). These let you keep your rights while allowing others to share, reuse, and sometimes adapt your work. There are six standard CC licenses, and you can choose how open your work should be.

Our Advice
We recommend using the most open license (CC BY 4.0) when possible. However, UG/UMCG does not require a specific license—our approach is: as open as possible, as closed as necessary.
Check if your funder has specific license rules (e.g. NWO, ZonMW and the EC require CC BY). If unsure, contact us.

Important Note on NC/ND Licenses
If you choose a CC BY-NC or ND license and sign a "License to Publish," you may unknowingly give the publisher exclusive control over how your work is reused or adapted. This isn’t always clearly explained. For more, see page 10 of the Guide to Creative Commons for Scholarly Publications and Educational Resources.
