Do NOT us Write-n-Cite inside Tables, Figures or Textbox! Use RCM instead.

The Write-n-Cite plugin is unable to correctly insert multiple citations in figures and tables.
We suggest inserting the citations in the body of the document and then copying the text of the citation into the table áfter formatting is complete.
Alternatively, you could use the RefWork Citation Manager (RCM) via the  Word "Invoegtoepassingen".

Please be advised you should only use the RCM starting with NEW documents.
Documents with citations entered with the Write-n-Cite plugin are NOT compatible with citations from RCM!

(Endnote and Mendeley have no problems with correctly placing multiple citations in figures, tables or textboxes. )

Login icon in Word is greyed out

Has the Log in icon turned gray?

Then Word probably turned off the Add-In after a weird action.

You can switch it on again via:

  • File
  • Options
  • Add-Ins
  • Is Write-n-Cite under the heading 'Disabled'?

Then go to:

  • Manage
  • select 'Disabled Items' and click Go
  • select Write-N-Cite and click Enable

Word 2016 on a Mac: "Word has misbehaved"

If you have Word 2016 on a Mac, you can install the RefWorks Citation Manager via the Store.

This Citation Manager doens't always work well on a Mac. Sometimes people get the error message:
"Unfortunately Word has misbehaved and we could not update some of your citations."

The only solution that seems to work is that you save your document as .doc (1997 - 2003 Word) and then save it as .docx

Export to Excel

Especially with a systematic review it can be useful to put references in an Excel spreadsheet. You can then add comments, for example why you are going to use a certain article or not. The new RefWorks has an export option for Excel:

  • Select a folder or go to All Documents
  • Click on the Share & Export icon:
  • Choose Export references
  • Select Tab Delimited (.tsv)
  • Click on Export
