Publish Open Access - the agreements with publishers: Springer

Everything you always wanted to know about open access

What are the main outlines of the agreement with Springer?

No author's fee for publishing in Springer's OpenChoice journals

Springer has agreed that articles from authors at universities will be published in open access, at no extra costs to the author. Authors must indicate themselves that the article should be published in open access. The agreement applies to the journals within the Springer OpenChoice program, with the exception of titles from SpringerOpen and BioMedCentral.

To which journals does this agreement apply?

Ignore the pop-up about 'Billing' when submitting

When submitting a manuscript to a Springer journal, you may get a pop-up about 'billing' at the end of the form (after a number of screens). This can happen even if it's a Springer’s OpenChoice journal. (These are journals for which UMCG authors are not required to pay a fee.)

If you’re using your UMCG e-mail address and a computer from the UMCG or the RUG, then you can ignore this pop-up because the publisher will recognize your affiliation with this institution. Even though Springer requires a billing address, you will not be charged.
